Friday
Friday is our rescue pup. He was listed on Petfinder.com as “Nameless dog in cage 12. Available until 6/19.” In fear of what might happen to him on 6/19, I contacted everyone I knew who was involved in Dalmatian rescue, and even contacted relatives in Idaho. I also contacted the rescue group that listed him, and sent a donation, hoping to buy him more time. When the lady asked where we lived, I told her western Washington, thinking that would rule us out as a home. To my surprise, she told me they were transporting rescue animals to our area the next week, and that she could save him if we would take him. I got the e-mail late on 6/18, and replied that I would take him. The next morning I was on the phone, calling to make sure she got my message, worried that I might be too late. It was a Friday morning, and that is how he got his name.
I met the rescue van the following Monday, without much of a plan. My goal was to foster him until I could find him a home. We stopped at a local pet store to buy him a collar and leash. We were there for nearly an hour because he was busy making friends with everyone in the store. I gave my number to an interested family, and relaxed, thinking it was going to be easy to find him a home. We met a lot of wonderful, caring people during our search, but in the end, we decided to keep him.
It had been 13 years since our last attempt at raising a puppy. Since then we’ve learned a lot about caring for old dogs, but none of that was good preparation for taking in a 6 month old puppy, while caring for 3 old dogs and a cat.
Friday keeps life interesting and entertaining for all of us. Harnessing his energy and keeping the “play monster” under control is a full time job.
